The Hidden Thorn

by Chandler, Enid, Okla.

In out, in out
Pain fades, lights dim
With every inhalation
The sorrows of this voyage, this life, fade away.
The pain of friends lost, of being away from home,
All of it fades.
The door opens,
In comes your friend, your leader
He speaks to you, urging, warning
You do not listen, you do not even hear.
He doesn’t know the sweet numbing relief of the beautiful blossom.
He takes you from the room.
The pain is coming
You cry out, you want relief
The man you thought was your friend isn’t,
If he was, he wouldn’t have taken away your only hope of relief.
He puts you in another room
It sways and spins
The floor beneath you rolls, as if you are on a ship.
The floor, or is it a deck, pitches back and forth.
You hear the roar of the storm outside,
Is it the storm or the pounding of your own mind?
Thoughts attack your heart,
The horrifying memories you tried to suppress pound on your hearts door.
It did this to you, that supposedly sweet blossom.
It never helped at all.
It suppressed the memories, but when they came back, they were worse.
You reach your hand into your pocket.
You pull your hand out, and look at the flower in your palm
As if by magic, the petals fall away, revealing a thick ugly thorn.
You watch your hand, as if by its own will, as it drops the thorn into the fire.
The sweet scent fills the room, you turn away.
You remember the thorn hidden in the flower.
You turn, and walk away,
Never more to visit the land of the lotus.

WOW people here really have talent. I read this and for a few moments I thought a professional had written this. It's sooo good. Some of it made me think of a friend I have. The other parts of something else. Sooo touching. :'( Keep writing.
