Heart for Haiti

Heart for Haiti
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12

Paul was kind of like a teacher and one of his favorite students was a young man named Timothy. Although he was young, Timothy set an example for the Christians of his time. Timothy’s purpose was to travel to different churches and teach them what it meant to be followers of Christ.

The pressure of setting an example for others to follow can seem overwhelming, but I believe God calls each of us to do what we can, with what we have, right where we are. We have a purpose that is bigger than ourselves. Our life choices and how we use our gifts bring glory to God, and our choices show the world what it means to be a Christian. Whether we are in school, at home or shopping at the mall – the world is watching.

I have been blessed to watch one of my students, Anna, live a life full of love, faith and action. Almost two years ago Anna traveled to Haiti with her family. The images she saw and the people she met left a lasting impression on her heart and mind. When she came home she wrote a song called “Heart for Haiti”. That song sparked an idea. God challenged her to think bigger than one song and one trip to Haiti. God has blessed Anna’s efforts and she has raised over $25,000 for the orphans and people of Haiti.

Just weeks ago our world watched as a devastating earthquake shook the once solid ground the people of Haiti called home. Groups of people from all over the world have responded to the needs of the Haitian people. The world has become unified in its efforts to help Haiti.

My student, Anna, is only 13. Her dream for helping orphans in Haiti is not one typical of most girls her age. But God has blessed her dream and she is making a difference. Some of you may have helped the people of Haiti through your church or community efforts. Would you share your experiences with the Susie sisterhood? Tell us what you did and how it made you feel. Your example will encourage others!

I can’t wait to hear about your experiences.

P.S. If you feel moved, help spread the word about Anna’s vision.  Maybe though your teen group or friends at school you could raise money to help Anna provide a home for the many orphans left behind in Haiti.  Here is a link to her site:  www.annafromtheheart.com.  You can watch a video and hear the song she wrote.  You can even order a CD!  100% of all donations and CD purchases go directly to the people of Haiti.  Wouldn’t it be awesome to have the Susie sisterhood come together to support this amazing effort!? We could take part in bringing God’s love and hope to the people of Haiti.  Together, we can do it!

I just read an awesome email from a young lady named Rose who has started a blog of her own in hopes of helping the people of Haiti. She wasn't able to leave a comment here but I wanted to share her efforts.

Over the last 2 weeks my home church has been putting together care packages for the survivors and care-givers...my heart is so encouraged by all these efforts!

I'd love to hear more about your church and your ideas for how we can help.
