R.E.A.D.

R.E.A.D.
Summer has officially begun. The daily grind of studying, reviewing, writing and preparing work for school is over. At least for the time being, that is.  School might not be in session, but that doesn’t mean we should let our brain go on vacation too!

I love relaxing outside, but because of my fair skin I usually find myself under an umbrella peering out at others who worship the sun. This time also offers great moments to read a good book.  Here are some ideas for making reading fun, fresh and fulfilling!

REVIEW a book that you’ve read before.  I can remember books that I read in school that challenged me, changed me and truly brought the written word to life.  I have specific titles of books from Junior High, High School and College that come to mind when I experience certain events and some of those titles are sitting on my bookshelf today. Reading a book a second time can be relaxing and revealing.  You might find that you remembered a character or an ending in a different way than it was actually written. Your life view is different now and you will find that your interpretation has changed too. It’s fun to explore familiar material with a new perspective!

EXPOSE yourself to books that you will be required to read next year. Most districts and curriculum packets provide a list of books that are required reading for various grade levels.  Look ahead and find a book that you know you’ll have to read and choose to enjoy it now – without the pressure of school.

ACTIVATE your imagination. As people get older, life becomes more focused, and often times, negative. Fictional novels bring drama, romance and suspense to our sometimes mundane summer days. Fiction can help our imagination flow. Fictional books transport us to another world and sometimes it’s really fun to visit these places and meet the people who live in that pretend world.

DISCOVER new promises found in scripture.  Summer is the perfect time to follow the command found in Ephesians 6:11.   Paul writes that we need to “put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes”.  No matter what issues you dealt with during this past year, or no matter what fears you may have about next year, reading God’s word helps assist you in putting on his full armor against these.

R.E.A.D. and discover something new about the world, about yourself and most importantly about God. It’s a fantastic way to start and finish the summer!

So before you dive into your summer R.E.A.D.ing program, share some of your favorite books with all of us?  Whether it’s a book of the Bible or a novel you’ve read – share the title and author with the rest of us so we can enjoy it too!

You are amazing!  I can’t wait to hear your suggestions!

I love reading too! :) Right now, I am reading my summer book report I have to read for next year. The book is Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. It is very interesting, but can be boring at times, since it is a diary. This book is non-fiction and takes place during the Holocaust. Highly recommend!

Reading is the best! It's one of my fav things to do, and really relaxes me. At the moment, I'm reading Diary of a teenage Girl: Becoming Me(written by Melody Carlson) for about the 5th time, and I still love it! I also just finished reading Chinese Cinderella,(written by Adeline Yen Mah)another really great book.

I've read a lot of Beverly Lewis books! I've got several of hers, and I loved her newest series! :)
Wanda E. Brunstetter is an awesome writer, I've got nearly all of her books, and she is one of my favorites!
Cathy Marie Hake is great, too! :)
I love to read nearly anything I can get my hands on, as long as it's Christian and it's clean. :)

If you don't like reading that much it is mostly likly because you haven't found the right book. Fiction makes some people fall asleep, and mistries can feel strange if you don't like them. My advice? Explore every section of your Library or Local book store. Pick out something from every section from si-fi to biographys, and try them out. You won't fall in love with every book you have read and that's o.k. But you will probibly find that you like a spicific kind of book and/or a auther. And remember, most books are a little slow going at first, so read at least half of the book before deciding to call it quits or not. But if you find yourself falling asleep halfway through, then that book might not be for you. Try out these ones I found to be good:
Anne of Green Gables by Lucy M. Montgumry,
The Narnia books (or anything by C.S. Lewis)
Books by Beverly Lewis. I would also recomend The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tollken but only to the very devoted reader.

I love reading so much! Especially the Christy Miller Series by Robin Jone Gunn. I have read all of the first three collections (or volumes) of the Christy Miller Series and I want to keep reading them

I love Hinds Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard. It is beautifully written and makes it easier to see Jesus as a tangible person. I've definitely learned a lot from it. The sequel ( Mountains of Spices) is awesome too.

I'm reading sense and sensibility by jane austen. I've just started and so far it's really interesting. The way the book was written kinda makes it hard to interpret though :( you really have to read it and work out what the authr is trying to convey. But so far so good!

I absolutely recommend books by Janette Oke. You might have seen the "Love Comes Softly" movies on Hallmark. Although they are good movies they are WAAAAAAAAAY off. The books are ten times better! And not just that series but the "Canadian West" series and the "Seasons of the Heart" series. She is my favorite author and I hope you will love her as much as I do.

I've been reading books by Michael Phillips and Judith Pella. They can be slow going sometimes (although not nearly as much as shakespeare or jane austen) but they are good fiction stories set in historical events. I have learned a lot about Russian and English history from the series The Russians and The Secrets of Heathersleigh Hall. I read Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris and i just bought Start Here, which is their next book. These books encourage teens to work beyond the low expectations of society and accomplish more. They have been a great encouragement to me. I love to read!
