I always love September with my students. We usually spend the first month getting to know each other, learning the rules of our classroom and reviewing concepts from the previous year. In September the formalities start to fade and we can finally sit back and enjoy each other’s company. September is also when the hard work begins. You have your syllabus, you’ve heard about the projects, book reports and papers you’ll be writing—but don’t get overwhelmed—take it one step at a time.
Some of you might have a REALLY big project weighing on your heart that has nothing to do with school. Maybe it’s a burden God has placed on your heart or a fresh calling on your life. As an educator, I’m excited to tell you that all the skills you are learning through your school work (discipline, planning, teamwork, problem-solving, communicating, etc.) will be key in helping you make the ideas in your head a reality.

For the last three years I’ve had an idea in my head (and my heart) and this month it is becoming a reality. I have always loved writing, but I never felt like I had much to say. After having children, and learning more life-lessons than I thought possible, I wanted to write about what I had learned. Suddenly I had a burden for all the mothers out there trying to balance everything that comes with a home, family, career and faith. So my burden—my dream—turned into three things:
1. A book: 7 Ways To Be A S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Mom (available on Amazon.com and most local Christian Bookstores September 1, 2010)
2. A new company: Smarter Moms LLC [I’m President and the only employee—it’s a great place to work :)]
3. A career in public speaking: I’m speaking to over 20 groups of moms and women all over the country during the next 9 months!
I feel like the new kid in class. I’ve never been at this place before! I’m nervous, excited and very busy! I just had to share with you, my sisters in Christ, this new adventure in my life. Even now, in my 30’s, I’m learning new things about myself and my God. God is so faithful, He gets ALL the glory and I am celebrating each day as He renews my spirit and helps me discover the desires of my heart.
Some of my favorite verses these days are:
Psalm 37:3-5 (NIV): “Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this.”
I have loved reading your comments and hearing your heart’s desires. Some of you wrote last month that you were starting public school for the first time or you were changing schools—HUGE events in the life of any girl and I’ve been praying for you! Even if you weren’t facing major changes this fall, I think every year of our life and schooling brings us to a new place of dependence on God. I’m sure we can all find something that has happened in the last month that has given us reason to celebrate His faithfulness in our lives, so . . .
LET’S CELEBRATE!
Get your party hat on and start thanking God for all the ways He’s been faithful to you! Let’s give God the glory by sharing our story! If you feel comfortable, tell us how God has helped you, protected you or encouraged you. Maybe a friend or teacher showed you God’s love and you want to thank them—let’s give a shout out and celebrate the amazing God we serve. He knows the desires of our heart and I am so excited that when we trust in Him, He is sure to do great things with us and through us!
You are wonderful!
